In the heart of the forests of the Catllaràs mountain range, around 12 km from the village of La Pobla de Lillet, stands the Xalet del Catllaràs, a unique building designed by Antoni Gaudí in 1902.
The building was constructed to accommodate the technicians and engineers working in the Catllaràs coal mines, which were operated at the beginning of the 20th century by the Portland cement company Asland. In 1932, the company transferred ownership of the building to the Town Council.
By the 1940s, the building was already in rather poor condition and, in 1971, it was renovated and converted into a youth hostel, replacing its most characteristic feature, the spiral staircase, with a metal one. At the end of the 1980s, due to changes in regulations, the building fell into disuse and began to deteriorate considerably. The exterior of the building has now been restored.
How to get there
On foot: there are several hiking routes starting from La Pobla de Lillet that lead to the Xalet.
By car: from the Santuari de Falgars, follow the forest track signposted «Xalet» for approximately 5 km.
Visitor information
The exterior of the Xalet del Catllaràs can be visited freely throughout the year. Access to the interior, however, is only possible on specific dates and during occasional visits organised by the Ajuntament de La Pobla de Lillet. These activities include guided 4x4 tours, which allow visitors to discover this emblematic site and its interior while combining heritage, nature and industrial history.
Visits to the Xalet del Catllaràs
From 2 July to 31 October, guided 4x4 tours are organised every Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 10 am. Tours are available for groups of between 2 and 8 people and cost €75 per person.
